They banished the spectre of overtime!
Facing tight budgets and even tighter turnaround times, the producers of Irul turned to ChopChop to escape the looming threat of overtime.
In the new ChopChop workflow, the sound recordist had to name every audio file with episode, scene, shot and take numbers. This was easily implemented.
Of more concern to the team was the need to jam-sync timecode on set. However, this turned out to be cheap and straightforward.
We looked into buying timecode boxes but we found it so much easier to just rent them from the sound mixer. This way, we didn’t just get the boxes, we also got the sound mixer's services. He set them up, synced everything first thing every day and handled all the troubleshooting.
He put all this into a package deal so it didn’t cost much more.
When the rushes hit the edit suite, ChopChop’s software synced it, organised it into scene bins and presented it on sync-mapped timelines, all in 60 seconds. The post team was ready to edit almost instantly.
It saved so much trouble; they made it a double, licensing 2 copies of ChopChop’s software for twice the speed.
The result? 100 hours saved in post-production and deadlines met without overtime.
With all this extra time, I can put so much more thought into my cuts. I can experiment with pacing and music and see whether there’s an even better way to do things. I was prepared to take this series to 100% but now I can take it to 120, 130% and beyond!
